Presentation Skills Coaching

Subject Some Reflections on European Law Moot Court

My invaluable year here at Columbia has afforded me the opportunity to learn from top professors and also from the assorted international colleagues I've studied with.

One of the highlights of being here was wining the European Moot Court Regional Finals in Slovenia and competing in the grand final in Luxembourg.

I am absolutely sure that the decisive factor that enabled me to show an outstanding performance in the Regional Finals of the competition, which helped Columbia team to win a right to participate in the final round in Luxembourg was working with an outstanding Presentation Coach, Arlene B. Isaacs. She has worked with lawyers at Debevoise Plimpton and Pillsbury Madison and other attorneys as well as with a former US Chief of Protocol and on a series of top-level global peace conferences with Chief Justices of various Supreme Courts. She helped me to communicate powerfully, to articulate, have eye contact, stand confidently, engage the judges of both rounds of the competition with ease. She prepared me.

Unfortunately, there is no preparation of any kind in
Presentation/Communication Skills offered at the Law School - at least our team did not get the preparation in that field which would be anywhere close to what was needed to meet a very high standard of the finals of the competition. Although we did meet with the professors a couple of times, but the advice they gave us was the advice on the points of law and not on our presentation/communication skills. I strongly believe that a separate class or series of lectures on Presentation/Communication skills, whether it's offered to all students or only moot court participants, would greatly enhance the education you provide them with. Brains and knowledge are not enough: Communications skills are crucial.

I sincerely believe that Arlene B. Isaacs would be a great asset to Columbia Law School and its students.

Sincerely,

Tomas Samul
